National Home Care (NHC)

Project Duration: 01.01.2017 — 31.12.2018

Number of Beneficiaries: 360

Location: Gyumri , VanadzorGavar, Artashat

Goal
Promote improvement of the life quality for the older people living in the cities of Gyumri, Vanadzor, Gavar, Artashat through provision of Home Care and Home Nursing services.

Activities
Issues affecting the older population have always been a focus of “Armenian Caritas” activities. Starting in 2002 with only 50 beneficiaries, our Home Care project now currently serves 360 older people; additionally, the project has increased its geographical reach to include the cities of Gavar and Vanadzor and including also Artashat city from October, 2016 and has expanded its services from a mere provision of food to providing multiple services. The beneficiaries of the project are the older lonely people over the age of 60, with no relatives living nearby who could support them, and strongly need care in their homes. The project beneficiaries are financially vulnerable, undergo poor living conditions, and have no income other than a miserable pension.Through the National Home Care program, these 360 elderly people in need of care receive regular nursing care, and are provided with medical services, information, and consultancies about care and health prophylactics. Program beneficiaries are also provided with necessary items for their rehabilitation and support, including hand sticks, walkers, round pillows, neck supporters, mobile toilets, and anti-decubitus materials.
In addition to the health and medical support, the program assists the older people with gathering documentation for the protection and exercise of their civil rights (i.e. pension, obtaining welfare, applying for new housing, applying for renovations, hooking up electricity or gas supply, assisting in juridical conflict resolution, etc.). Beneficiaries are also provided with social support and help from volunteers; and the program contributes to the interaction of the older people with outside society through organizing activities for their leisure and entertainment.
The working group for the National Home Care project is comprised of experts in the field, and regularly meets with state institutions at the local, regional, and national levels within the health and social sectors in order to increase the number of projects. The working group also lobbies and advocates for better social, health, and living conditions for the older people. Public relations activities, meetings, round-table discussions, and conferences are conducted in partnership with relevant institutions and local non-profit organizations that are also engaged in work with the older people and home care.
